Installing Nougat firmware based Custom ROMs

WARNING

This guide is not applicable to Official MIUI ROMs. Do not follow this guide if you are running on Official MIUI 8 ROM.

Always create backup or copy of your files in another storage or pc/laptop to prevent accidental data loss during the procedures posted here.

Guide posted here requires unlocked bootloader. Unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty. If you don’t know what a bootloader means and how bootlader status might affect your phone, read here: Blog Link


Current list of Custom ROMs requiring Nougat firmware to boot:

  • MIUI 8 EU Nougat (Stable/Developmental)
  • Resurrection Remix v5.8.2 and later

INSTRUCTIONS

For users already using Nougat firmware based ROM

  • Root your phone: Blog Link
  • Flash TWRP v3.0.3 (Skip if you already flashed this TWRP version)
  • Reboot to TWRP v3.0.3
  • [Recommended] Perform factory reset/data wipe
  • Flash ROM
    • Resurrection Remix needs Opengapps for Google Playstore functionality
      • Download OpenGApps: Site Link
      • Choose: ARM64, 7.1, nano
  • [Optional] Flash SuperSU v2.79

For users of ROM w/ Lollipop firmware

WARNING: This will lock your bootloader if you are not officially unlocked: Official Bootloader Unlocking for Mi4c

  • Root your phone: Blog Link
  • Flash TWRP v3.0.2 (Skip if you already flashed this TWRP version)
  • Reboot to TWRP
  • Flash Nougat firmware zip: Download Link
  • [Required] Flash SuperSU v2.79
  • Flash TWRP v3.0.3 img file in TWRP
    • Download: Site Link
    • Install -> Flash IMG -> locate the  TWRP v3.0.3 .img file
  • Reboot -> Reboot Recovery
  • [Recommended] Perform factory reset/data wipe
  • Flash ROM
    • Resurrection Remix needs Opengapps for Google Playstore functionality
      • Download and flash OpenGApps: Site Link
      • Choose: ARM64, 7.1, nano
  • [Optional] Flash SuperSU v2.79

NOTES

  • After flashing Nougat firmware based ROM and Rebooting to System, the following issues might happen:
    • Phone reboots to TWRP Recovery
      • Choose Reboot > System
    • Phone boots with black screen for more than 30 seconds:
      • Just press and hold the Power button until the Mi Logo appears, then release the button. The phone might reboot several times and will eventually boot the system.
